Unifiber fin selector

This fin selector is developed to give a fin length advice which is related to a certain board with and sail size combination. For example: for a 65 cm wide board and a 6.7 sail you could use a fin between 33 and 37 cm. This advice can be used for Slalom, Race and Freeride boards which will be used with race and freeride sails. The type of fin can be slalom / speed race or freeride.

The fin length you want to choose is depending on certain variables. For example: Do you like to sail over or underpowered, is the wind consistent or gusty, would you like to have good upwind performance, etc. All these parameters are influencing the ideal fin size. For easy upwind performance together with gusty winds you should choose a larger fin. When you like to sail powered up for pure speed sailing you want to choose the smallest fin in the specific range.

The given fin sizes are roughly the same for freeride and race fins. Freeride fins tend to be easier to sail and jibe easier than slalom / race fins. Slalom / race fins in general give more power lift and so a better speed potential.

Please consider the tips below when you are experimenting with board trim.

Choose a longer fin within the given range when:
1.    the board does not track well upwind
2.    the board is not fast enough on the plane
3.    the board slows down in a wind breach
4.    the board tend to slide lee wards
5.    the board is spin out sensitive
6.    the ride is “too” smooth

Choose a shorter fin within the given range when:
7.    board want to go windward
8.    the board tends to lift out of the water (tail walks)
9.    the board has bad control during the jibe or is difficult to jibe
