Boom length adjustment

Maximum 50 cm adjustment for aluminium booms and 60 cm for carbon booms. Pick the length range that covers the sails you ride most.

Narrow or wide tail

When using bigger sail sizes, typically around 6.8 and larger, a wider tail is sensible. Wide tail booms ensure the sail profile is not disturbed when sailing with low outhaul tension, as is often the case in lighter wind. Narrow tail booms, particularly if used with bigger sails, can restrict and deform the sail profile, resulting in sub-optimal performance and potentially compromising sail durability.

Modern wave sails are also designed to have quite a deep profile, so it is wise to consider tail width on smaller booms too.

Inside tail or outside tail

Two main options for the boom tail: a larger diameter tail that goes outside the boom body, or a smaller diameter tail that goes inside.

Tail inside allows the length adjustment lock to be fixed at the end of the boom body, which makes operation simple. Downside: the tail itself, being of narrower diameter, is less stiff.

Tail outside requires a wider diameter boom tail, which adds stiffness. Downside: locating the holes for the length adjustment lock can sometimes be difficult.

For shorter sized booms the tail outside option is not offered, as the tail would interfere with the back hand during normal sailing.

Boom tail system

For quick rigging, the loop-to-loop option is most convenient. Best option for medium-sized and smaller sails: it will help you get rigged and out on the water quickly.

The pulley option provides a solution for use on booms fitted with an adjustable outhaul system. Great feature for bigger sails and racing.

What is monocoque construction and why is it important?

Monocoque construction means the boom has a continuous tube design running from side to side through the head piece, rather than separate arms attached to the head.

This design provides superior rigidity, better load distribution, and enhanced durability compared to two-piece designs.

What is a C-Shape Boom?

A C-shape boom features a curved profile with parallel tubes that follows a more natural hand position, reducing wrist strain and improving control compared to traditional straight booms.

Carbon vs. aluminum - which should I choose?

Carbon booms are approximately 30% lighter, provide superior rigidity, and offer better sail shape control, making them ideal for advanced riders.
Aluminum booms are more impact-resistant, cost-effective, and forgiving, making them perfect for beginners

Which grip diameter should I choose for my hands?

Reduced Diameter Grips : measure around 26mm and are better for smaller hands and cold-water sailing, offering enhanced control. SDG
Standard Diameter Grips are about 29mm, preferred by racers and those with larger hands, providing a traditional feel.

What about V-Grip and Oval options?

V-Grips offer enhanced rigidity and a unique ergonomic feel but can cause blisters for some riders.
Oval grips provide a balance between comfort and performance.
Tapered designs vary in diameter along the boom length for optimized comfort and strength.

How much should I spend on a boom?

Your budget should focus on long-term value rather than initial cost.

Entry-level aluminum booms range from €100-300,
premium aluminum from €300-500,
Carbon booms from €500-1000.
